Ávila

The capital of the province of Ávila (47,650 inhabitants), located at 1,128m above sea level on an elevated rock formation on the right bank of the Adaja River, is the highest provincial capital in Spain.

The city is mainly characterised by its complete Medieval Roman wall. It is also one of the cities with the highest number of (Romanesque and Gothic) churches in proportion to its population. Ávila is also known by many for its connection with the life of the mystic and poet Santa Teresa de Jesus. The Santa Teresa Convent houses a museum dedicated to this Saint.
